Fayette operates under the Mayor-Council form of government. Each office holder is elected to a four year term. Elections are held separate from state and federal elections. Besides the Mayor, there are five council members. Each council member is assigned oversight for a unit of city government. Several boards with members approved by the Council are appointed to manage specific interests of the city.

The City Council meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Meetings begin at 5:00 PM in City Hall at 203 Temple Avenue North.
